Artificial Intelligence and the Evolution of the Design Process: A Case Study of Projects by Leading Global Architects

This research examines the transformation of the architectural design process in the era of artificial intelligence through a critical analysis of how AI is employed in both design and creative practices. The study aims to evaluate the real impact of artificial intelligence on the role of the architect by analyzing the approaches of selected leading international firms that have integrated AI into their work: Zaha Hadid Architects (parametric generation and complex forms), Foster + Partners (functional applications for sustainability and performance), Vincent Callebaut Architectures (integration of AI with bio architecture), and MAD Architects (AI in organic and ambitious spatial design). The study adopts a qualitative content analysis methodology, selecting a sample of projects from these four firms that represent architectural directions using AI technologies. Analytical material was collected from two main sources: visual outputs (images, drawings, and architectural models) and accompanying texts (press releases, architects’ statements, and specialized articles explaining design philosophy and the role of technology). Findings indicate that the future of architecture lies in an integrative partnership, where the architect provides creative vision while artificial intelligence expands the range of possible solutions. AI contributes effectively across most stages of the architectural design process. The originality of this research lies in its focus on the relationship between AI and pioneering architects. Results show that leading architects have employed AI in diverse and effective ways, each offering a unique vision for its application, underscoring the importance of keeping pace with contemporary trends and leveraging AI applications to advance architectural practice.
